Dear CSA Member.

Finally the delivery season for your CSA shares begins.  The planting, plowing, preparation has been going on at the farm since February and we are so happy to finally be delivering.
Your share is full of early lettuces, Asian greens, radishes and oregano.  Beautiful salads and stir fry await.
If you would still like to add a fruit share or a coffee share please go to the farm website and down load the form.  Fruit shares do not start until the 5th delivery and we will start the coffee share delivery the second week of delivery.  We are also offering coffee by the pound along with honey and maple syrup.  The forms are on the website as well.
Please take a look at our photos on the website.  Jen has been doing a great job taking photos and posting them.  She has also been adding entries to the farm blog.  Both will give you a  better picture of our farm.  Jen has added a photo of the greens from this week on the blog with their names.  Some look similar so you may like to check the photo.
We are working on adding farm work days to our calendar this year and I will be sending more information once we have the dates decided.  It seems early, but please pencil in the annual Farm Visit which will takes place the second Saturday in September.  This year the date is September 11.  More details will be coming on the Farm Visit as well.
Welcome.
Enjoy the vegetables.  Deb, for everyone at Stoneledge Farm

Full Vegetable Share
Cherriette Radishes – 1 bunch
Boc Choi – 1 bunch
Red Leaf Lettuce – 2 heads
Buttercrunch Lettuce – 1 head
Arugula – 1 bunch
Mizuna – 1 bunch
Mustard – 1 bunch
Oregano – 1 bunch
A note about greens. The greens are just beautiful and we have dunked them to cool them but they are not washed.  An easy way to clean them is to take them from the bunch, swish in a basin of cold water, drain and rinse again.  Dry them well in a salad spinner or cotton towels.  They will keep crisp and delicious in your refrigerator in a plastic container.  I have also heard they will keep well in a clean cotton pillow case and even in a closed paper bag.
You will notice small holes in the Arugula, Mustard, Mizuna and Boc Choi.  They are all part of the same vegetable family and the insect called the Flea Beetle love them.  We do our best to keep them off with floating row cover, but they are really small and very tenacious.  It is only cosmetic damage and the vegetables are the best of the early season.

Looks like there are a couple of notes about where shares are and are not available.  This posting consolidates the info and relevant links in one place:

Yorkville – Shares are sold out but there are some active comments of members looking for partners

Carnegie Hill – No shares available as far as I can tell

88th Street – Shares are sold out but there are some active comments of members looking for partners

Lenox Hill – Shares may still be available (see the Stoneledge link below) and there are some active comments of members looking for partners

92nd St Y – Shares were still available a couple of weeks ago (see the Stoneledge link below)

Mount Sinai – Shares are still available (see the Stoneledge link below)

The Stoneledge Farm CSA locations page has the most updated status.  If you are able to sign up directly, go for it.  If not, put yourself on the waiting list for any CSA group you may be interested in joining.  Future memberships are offered to folks on the waiting list before the general public.

It’s time to start registering for our volunteer shifts!

Volunteering at the East 88th Street CSA is a vital and enjoyable requirement of membership.  Each membership (full share) must volunteer at least twice during the 24-week CSA cycle, so check your calendar and sign up for your shifts online, or send an email to janestevens89@live.com (Please note: if you are splitting a share, you may decide to either elect a representative or both share partners may sign up.  Each share must volunteer twice per season).  Apart from producing the vegetables — Stoneledge does that! — our CSA is totally run by members so please bring some patience and a sense of humor when you come to pick up.

There are  3 time slots:

4:30 – 6:00 (2 Volunteers) – Set Up

* Setting up the tables and supplies
* Dividing half share items
* Checking in and assisting new members during pickup

5:30 – 7:00 (1 Volunteer) – Swing / Check-in

* Checking in and assisting new members during pickup
* Replenishing items

6:45 – 7:30 (2 Volunteers) – Clean Up / Heavy Lifters

* Checking in and assisting new members during pickup
* Replenishing items
* Bring leftover items to the church kitchen
* Put away tables and supplies
* Clean the site

We have an experienced group of volunteers so don’t worry about being left alone to do something you’ve never done before.  Watch for postings and email reminders throughout the season.  We do go back and make sure that all our members have fulfilled the volunteer requirement at the end of each season; failure to do so may hinder your renewal for 2011.
